The late Christopher Benninger was more than an architect—he was a visionary who believed architecture could transform lives. His work, spanning continents and generations, left an indelible mark on the built environment. When he passed in 2024, the architectural community across the world, including Uganda, mourned his loss.

On March 28, 2025, the International University of East Africa (IUEA) was deeply honoured to host the launch of his final book, Great Expectations: Notes to an Architect. This event, held in collaboration with the Uganda Society of Architects (USA) and Christopher Charles Benninger Architects (CCBA), was a heartfelt tribute to his life and work—a celebration of his contributions to architecture and a guiding light for future architects.

Honouring Christopher Benninger’s Legacy at IUEA

At IUEA, we embrace technology. We embrace new ideas.
— Said Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa, IUEA Vice-Chancellor

This book launch was more than just an unveiling; it was a moment to reflect on the profound impact of architecture on society. IUEA was privileged to once again be the venue for celebrating architectural excellence, following the previous commemoration of Architect William Henry Ssentoogo.

Guided by Chrispus Opakrwoth, the event was a dynamic and engaging experience, featuring speeches from distinguished guests, including:

  • Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa, Vice-Chancellor, IUEA
  • Prof. Lakshmi Bhabhuu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, IUEA
  • Dr. Abdulsalam Shema, Acting Dean of Engineering, IUEA
  • Architect Jacqueline Namayanja, President, Uganda Society of Architects

A key highlight of the launch was the announcement of internship opportunities for IUEA students at CCBA, furthering our mission “to provide an education that includes practical skills”.

Keynote Address: Lessons from a Master Architect

First principle in architecture: Respect nature
— Said Mr. Ramprasad Akkisetti, Managing Director, CCBA Designs

The keynote speech by Mr. Ramprasad Akkisetti was an immersive journey through Benninger’s groundbreaking designs and his philosophy of architecture as a force for good. Far from a conventional lecture, it was an engaging, interactive session that exposed students to real-world architectural challenges and solutions. While not intended, the session perfectly adds to our Academia-Industry Partnership Lecture Series organised by the Faculty of Engineering.

From client requests to conceptualisation to final structures, attendees gained insights into CCBA’s iconic projects across India, Bhutan, Burundi, and beyond, including:

  • A zero-energy building designed by Benninger under CCBA
  • The world’s tallest hostel
  • The first factory design to win the Indian Institute of Architects’ National Award
Mr. Ramprasad Akkisetti, Managing Director of CCBA Designs, captivates the audience with an interactive session on CCBA’s innovative architectural designs.

A few powerful takeaways stood out:

  • Architects are problem solvers—they design for function and impact.
  • Sustainability is essential—working with nature, not against it.
  • Community matters—great architecture serves people.
  • Efficiency is key—maximising space and reusing resources.

Following this, Mr. Rahul Sathe, CCBA’s Director, shared business insights, emphasising the importance of contract research, material selection, collaboration, and integrity in architectural practice.

Mr. Rahul Sathe, Director of CCBA, engages the audience in an insightful discussion on the business side of architecture.

Christopher Benninger: Architecture As Poetry

Born in Ohio in 1942, Christopher Benninger’s passion for architecture was ignited early on by reading Frank Lloyd Wright’s Natural House. Educated at Harvard and MIT, he later became a Harvard professor before finding his true calling in India, where he spent most of his career designing for urban transformation, sustainability, and community empowerment.

His impact spanned continents, with projects in India, Bhutan, China, and Africa and partnerships with the World Bank, the United Nations, and multiple governments. He was also a dedicated educator, founding the School of Planning at CEPT University and influencing generations through his teaching, writing, and mentorship.

Introducing Great Expectations: Notes to an Architect

These books will tell you how to be an architect—and the responsibility that comes with it.
— Said Mr. Ramprasad Akkisetti

Unveiled at the event by CCBA Designs, Great Expectations: Notes to an Architect is a fitting final work from a master architect. This book expands on the ideas from his acclaimed Letters to a Young Architect, offering personal insights into the journey, challenges, and responsibilities of an architect. Divided into four sections—education, practice, challenges, and history—it serves as both a memoir and a professional guide.

Copies of Great Expectations: Notes to an Architect, generously donated to IUEA, ensuring Benninger’s wisdom continues to inspire future architects.
