At last, the drum rolls were played and hearts were shaken, curiosity at its peak, the audience in silence, you could hear a pin drop in the room of about 1500 people. God was passing by as the saying goes, Judge Joram, slowly got the Microphone, before he could announce the winner, you could see in the eyes of the 3 lone standers that everyone believed they were the new queen, shaking, sweating & maintaining the smile. The judge, however, could only name one of the three, the winner is” he announced, contestant number 21, the audience was in awe, they erupted into noise and cheers, yes Maria Nakiranda was the new queen of IUEA 2019/2020. She rose up to the stage and stood between her King and the Dolphins.
It was a glamorous event that shook the entire campus, prior to the event which kicked off at 10; the talk on the campus was who the winner should be. Students and other spectators had watched these girls in their 3 weeks training and had already decided their winners. However, at the finale, it was going to be nothing they have imagined. The contestants had worked in all departments from; social mobilizes designers, makeup artists, and dancers. It was a night they were prepared to stage a show to remember.
At the backstage it was like a circus Havana, the traffic was too much as the department was working on each of the contestants, inside the auditorium, the party had already started, red carpet, photoshoot, and cheering, it was a sign of the what was about to come.
As soon as MC Sheila officially welcomed the contestants on the runway, we couldn’t believe our eyes, the catwalk was simply the best, the attire was unmatched, and the beauty & the “snygg” were out of this world. Yeah, this is IUEA, Excellence is what we do.
The contestants made rounds on the runway with different outfits i.e office wear, talent wear, creative wear, beachwear, and dinner wear. Contestants really gave their all, who would forget the magic trick by contestant number 5 that drove the audience crazy, or the same number 5 to pop on the stage as a pope. The Spartan who frightened and awed the crowd with his sword and muscles, the perfect choreography from the eventual winner contestant number 21, the MJ moonwalk from number 1, the beautiful poems from contestants number 18 and number 15 Or the sparkling lightning dress from number 19 and The Angel. The beachwear which was the audience’s favorite (for reasonable reasons). It really portrayed how this competition is growing and might take the center stage of the events not to miss in the capital.
IUEA being a very tough ground for a local artist to prove themselves, Pia Pound and Big Trill had this in mind, and they delivered, the new national anthem (Parte after Parte) got everyone up from their seats.
As the night was winding down approaching the dawn, a decision had to be made and a Mr and a Miss had to be announced to the already tired but live audience who had waited for 8 hours. A panel of judges including Joram, Sheirlat, and Roselyne had come to a final solution, they would name the five finalists and each would answer the same question. Maria and Ssemuju were so articulate and managed to convince the judges to crown them.
The event was graced by the Resident director Mr. Hassan Alwi, the marketing director Fathluni Alwi who spearheaded the event, and other staff, guests, journalists and past winners of MR& Miss IUEA.
