Introduction
IUEA scholarship programme is designed in IUEA’s founders’ spirit of giving to the community and making education available to all regardless of race, gender, class, religion or economic status. The scholarships are available to both current and prospective students.
These scholarships recognize exceptional talent and achievement, and they also recognize the need to improve the opportunity gap for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, specifically for women. As such, recipients are expected to exhibit a high standard of work, academic performance and or high-level of creativity and innovation. The scholarships fall into five broad areas: Innovation, academic excellence, athletics, vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society and IUEA staff development scholarship.
There are five types of scholarships that prospective and continuing students can apply for:
The African Innovator Scholarship
The African Scholar Scholarship
Sports Scholarship
The Vulnerable and Disadvantaged group Scholarship
The IUEA Staff Development Scholarship.
Scholarship award criteria differ, depending on the type of scholarship (innovation, academic, sports, disadvantaged group, etc.) and mode of selection also varies, depending on the awarding institution (e.g. Foundation, institutional funding, departmental). Detailed award criteria can be found in the section for each type of scholarship provided below in the Scholarship Award Criteria section.
IUEA has made some scholarships available to its Board of Directors (BOD), University Council (UC) and to some countries. Each member of the Board of Directors has been given two scholarships they can give out to students of their choice. Each University Council member has been given two scholarships they can give out to students of their choice. The two scholarships for both the BOD and for the UC are given every three years. As of 2020, the following eight countries have five scholarships each every five years:
Uganda
Kenya
Rwanda
Burundi
South Sudan
The Democratic Republic of the Congo
Somalia
Nigeria
The country scholarships are awarded to Ambassadors who are expected to select students on merit, gender-balanced and from different parts of the countries they represent.
Each scholarship type is allotted a percentage, representing the number of students that can be awarded a scholarship in that category. The percentages are as follows:
African Innovator Scholarship 30%
African Scholar Scholarship 25%
African Sports Scholarship 10%
Disadvantaged Women Scholarship 15%
IUEA Staff Development Scholarship 20%
IUEA has three intakes, January, May and August intakes. Scholarships will be distributed by intakes on the following percentages:
January intake 20%
May intake 20%
August intake 60%
Application for January intake opens on September 1st and closes on December 30th. Selection of recipients for the January intake will be finalized on or before January 15th. Late applications will not be processed.
Application for May intake opens on February 1st and closes on April 30th. Selection of recipients for the May intake will be finalized on or before May 15th. Late applications will not be processed.
Application for August intake opens on June 1st and closes on July 30th. Selection of recipients for the August intake will be finalized on or before August 15th. Late applications will not be processed.
Recipients of scholarships will be informed well before the 50% payment deadline. A list of names of scholarship recipients will be sent to the Accounts office.
There are two types of scholarships, full and half scholarships. Full scholarship includes tuition fees but excludes accommodation and functional fees. Students who are awarded a full scholarship are expected to pay for their accommodation and to pay functional fees and their upkeep.
For half scholarship, the student gets a 50% discount on fees and is fully responsible for other costs – functional fees, accommodation, upkeep.
Some scholarships last for the duration of the student’s study. For 3-year programmes, the scholarship lasts for three years, for a 4-year programme the scholarship lasts for four years, etc. Though the scholarships last for the duration of a student’s study, the student must maintain the innovation, academic and sports requirements to continue to keep the scholarship. Scholarship performance is reviewed at the end of every semester. In cases where the scholarship is for a short duration, the student will be informed of the duration of the scholarship.
The scholarship programme is administered by the Academic Registrar’s office (AR). The AR’s office is supported in this effort by a scholarship committee. The committee will comprise members who can evaluate candidates for each type of scholarship. A member of the committee must be competent in the area of innovation to competently assess innovation scholarship applicants, another member must be versed in sports to determine sports scholarship applicants reasonably, and yet another member must be capable in the area of social issues in order to be qualified to evaluate disadvantaged person scholarship application.
Selection of scholarship recipients is dependent on the source of scholarships (Foundation, institutional funding, BOD, UC, departmental, ambassadorial). The AR and the scholarship committee will be responsible for selecting Innovation, Academic, scholarship recipients. Each member of the Board of Directors will be responsible for selecting the students they wish to give scholarships, as long as the student meets the essential academic requirement for such scholarship. The external organization sponsoring students are responsible for selecting students for a scholarship as long as the student(s) meet the academic qualification set out by IUEA. Ambassadors are responsible for selecting students who receive country scholarships, but the students must meet the qualifications set out by IUEA.

Scholarship Award Criteria
Given the differences in the areas that each scholarship type represents, it is logical to expect different criteria for the award of each scholarship. Not all scholarships emphasize top academic performance. Below are the criteria for each type of scholarship.
This scholarship is awarded to those who CREATE new technology. Recipients could come from any country, and they could be high school graduates who are ready for university education, or they could be continuing students at IUEA. IUEA provides recipients of the Innovation scholarship with the resources and skills they need to turn their ideas into reality. Recipients must:
Be a prospective student – has finished high school and is qualified to join a university or
Be a continuing student with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher. This scholarship recognizes the importance of academic achievement in the growth and development of the well-rounded scholar
Exhibit academic talent and the desire to pursue scholarly work
Participate in community service
Participate in mentoring/coaching other students who need educational assistance
Maintain the IUEA Code for academic and social integrity and responsibility and to:
Keep time at all times
Take responsibility for their work and work with integrity
Must work independently and not wait for someone to tell them what to do
Must be dedicated to quality and professionalism
This scholarship is awarded to those who excel academically. Recipients could come from any country, and they could be high school graduates who are ready for university education, or they could be continuing students at IUEA. IUEA provides recipients with the academic tools they need in order to succeed as a researcher or scholar. Recipients must:
Be a prospective student – has finished high school and is qualified to join a university
Be a continuing student with a CGPA of 4.0 or higher. It is generally accepted that geniuses may not necessarily score highly in an academic test but exhibit unassailable intelligence in their ability to create technology to solve problems. The innovation scholarship is for those students who show high-order ability in innovation but may not necessarily have a high academic score.
Show evidence of technical ability to develop relevant, practical solutions to local, regional or global problems
Demonstrate the desire to pursue innovation seriously and consistently with a respect for the process as well as the product
Participate in community service
Be able to take responsibility for a significant piece of the work the student is engaged in without waiting to be told what to do
Maintain the Innovation Code:
Keep time at all times
Take responsibility for their work and work with integrity
Must work independently and not wait for someone to tell them what to do
Must be dedicated to quality and professionalism
This scholarship is awarded to those who excel in sports. Recipients could come from any country, and they could be high school graduates who are ready for university education, or they could be continuing students at IUEA. IUEA provides recipients of the sports scholarship with the physical and mental training needed to excel in sports. Recipients must:
Be a prospective student – has finished high school and is qualified to join a university
Be a continuing student with a CGPA of 3.5 or higher. This scholarship recognizes the importance of academic achievement in the growth and development of the well-rounded scholar
Exhibit academic talent and the desire to pursue scholarly work
Participate in community service
Participate in mentoring/coaching other students who need educational assistance
Maintain the IUEA Code for academic and social integrity and responsibility and to:
Keep time at all times
Take responsibility for their work and work with integrity
Must work independently and not wait for someone to tell them what to do
Must be dedicated to quality and professionalism
This scholarship is gender-based and is awarded to women who come from disadvantaged families. IUEA provides recipients of this scholarship with the financial and entrepreneurial support they need. Recipients must:
Be a prospective student – has finished high school and is qualified to join a university
Be a continuing student with a CGPA of 3.5 or higher and must be female
Demonstrate talent and the desire to succeed is a significant determinant to receiving this scholarship
Participate in community service
Maintain the IUEA Code for academic and social integrity and responsibility and to:
Keep time at all times
Take responsibility for their work and work with integrity
Must work independently and not wait for someone to tell them what to do
Must be dedicated to quality and professionalism
As the saying goes, “Charity begins at home”. This scholarship is geared towards the development of IUEA staff, academic and admin, who fit into any one of the five scholarship types offered by IUEA. The objective is to provide upward mobility to our staff. IUEA offers recipients for this scholarship with the financial and entrepreneurial support they need. Recipients must:
Demonstrate talent and the desire to succeed is a significant determinant to receiving this scholarship
Have been a full-time staff of IUEA for at least two years
Participate in community service
Maintain the IUEA Code for academic and social integrity and responsibility and to:
Keep time at all times
Take responsibility for their work and work with integrity
Must work independently and not wait for someone to tell them what to do
Must be dedicated to quality and professionalism
