Our donation drive revealed some true heroes because who needs capes when you’ve got the big-hearted community of the International University of East Africa (IUEA)? This summer, our students and staff came together in July and August 2024 to make a lasting impact on the Kitalanga community. The grand finale? A ceremony on the 30th of August that was less about formalities and more about celebration, with surprise performances and exciting announcements that had everyone on the edge. Here’s a sneak peek at the unforgettable day that’s bound to inspire you to join the cause.

What is Kitalanga?

Within a mile from our campus, this is a tight-knit community where kindness is not merely a word but a way of life. These unsung heroes embody the spirit of togetherness, always ready to lend a helping hand. So our donation drive wasn’t just about giving but reinforcing the very values this community holds dear.

Who did IUEA bring?

“The Alwi family is dedicated to improving the lives of people in Africa” – Ambassador Moses Kiwe Sebunya

Leading the charge were some of IUEA’s most respected figures: Ambassador Moses Kiwe Sebunya, our Board of Trustees Chairman, Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Lakshmi Bhabuu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ms. Sheila Ombogo, our Head of Marketing, and, of course, the IUEA Queens. Ambassador Moses Kiwe Sebunya underscored how deeply the spirit of giving back resonates with our university’s founders. The heartfelt welcome from Ms. Mbaja Christine, the local council chairperson, further emphasised the profound significance this act of unity held for her.

How did the donation drive go?

During the donation drive, we put out the call for clothes and accessories, and the IUEA community answered with gusto. From textbooks to nasal medication, our students and staff brought it all. Here’s just a taste of what was donated:

  • Clothes: For adults, youth and kids
  • Accessories: Shoes, belts and hats for all ages
  • Bedroom essentials: Bedsheets, towels and blankets

How does IUEA donate?

“Promises get you friends but performance keeps them” – Ambassador Moses Kiwe Sebunya

At IUEA, we don’t just drop off donations and call it a day, we throw a party! With epic beats, superstar performances, and loads of prizes, our donation day was more celebration than ceremony. The Kitalanga community brought their own unique vibe, showing off wit, humour, and some innovative dance moves.

As per his M.O., IUEA’s games master, Mr. Ssali Gerald, brought the hype with games and prizes. Picture a classroom pop quiz but with fun and laughter instead of stress, where the right answer gets you a prize and the wrong one? Just more laughs! Everyone was engaged, alert, and having the time of their lives.

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, the glam queen and music icon Nina Roz took the stage by storm! An IUEA student herself, Nina Roz turned the event from a joyful gathering into an epic rave. Her surprise performance was a dream come true for many fans in the community, some of whom even got to share the stage with her. It was a moment of pure magic, with everyone from the shyest audience members to the most enthusiastic fans singing along. But Nina didn’t just steal the show, she also showed her support for local businesses, making the day even more memorable for everyone involved.

Can someone still donate?

Absolutely! While the summer 2024 donation drive was the official kick-off, our mission to spread love and hope doesn’t end here. The posters might be down, and the donation boxes may have moved, but we’re still accepting donations. So please don’t hold back, keep the love flowing!

At IUEA, we don’t just talk about caring for our community; we live it. Our commitment to philanthropy goes from groundbreaking innovations and research to the small acts of kindness that can change someone’s life today. From providing sanitary pads to delivering COVID relief packages, we’re committed to supporting our community, and that’s just the beginning. Follow us on social media to stay updated on our next philanthropic adventure!

The Vice-Chancellor shares insights into the incredible opportunities available at IUEA.

The success of this event was a testament to both IUEA and the Kitalanga community. We’re honoured to have such warm and welcoming neighbours, and their joy made the donation day truly special. It’s amazing how something as simple as a pair of shoes or a warm blanket can mean the world to someone else. So, don’t underestimate the power of small actions. As fun as it is to imagine, you don’t need superpowers to be a hero; all it takes is a little heart

So, here’s to the heroes without capes, to the tight-knit community that cares, and to the power of giving back. Let’s keep the spirit alive and continue making a difference, one donation at a time.

The IUEA representatives officially hand over the donations to the Kitalanga community.
