What is the HESFB Loan Scheme?

Launched in 2014, the Higher Education Students Financing Board (HESFB) is a game-changer for Ugandan students. It provides loans to those who have the drive to succeed but need financial support to pursue accredited courses at recognised institutions. This initiative aligns with the goals of Uganda’s National Development Plan to make education accessible to all and foster critical skill development for national progress, a key part of our MOU with NEMA. The government has entrusted a select few institutions with the privilege of offering this loan, ensuring that eligible students receive top-notch education. This honour underscores the incredible trust and confidence in the quality of education provided by IUEA, as demonstrated by our esteemed charter.

Why Choose the HESFB Loan?

  • Support for All: Whether you are facing economic challenges or other disadvantages, this loan is designed to help you succeed.
  • Promoting Growth: Focus on courses that drive national development and personal growth.

Has anyone received this student loan before?

Absolutely! Over nearly a decade, the HESFB loan scheme has transformed the lives of countless Ugandan scholars, enabling them to secure fulfilling jobs and repay their loans while thriving in their careers. At IUEA, we are proud to have already enrolled students through this program, including Mr. Fred Ssaka, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Information Technology, and Mr. Ryan Aita, who is studying for a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering. These success stories are a testament to the life-changing impact of the HESFB loan and the exceptional education provided at IUEA.

Can someone get disqualified after being accepted for the loan scheme?

Stay on track to avoid disqualification due to:

  • Poor grades
  • Unapproved changes in your programme or institution
  • Change of citizenship
  • Falsifying documents
  • Benefiting from another government program
  • Substance abuse or criminal activities

Are there any benefits to repaying the loan early?

Repaying your loan early is a smart move! It reduces your total debt and eliminates interest charges. Plus, if your family or guardian can contribute to your fees during your studies, interest will only apply to the amount covered by the HESFB. This strategy significantly lowers both your debt and interest, making your financial journey smoother and more manageable.

How do I repay the loan?

Your repayment period starts 12 months after completing your course. The terms are flexible and negotiated between you and the board, with the first instalment due 30 days post-negotiation.

What if I delay to repay the loan?

To ensure smooth repayment, HESFB collaborates with employers, and credit reference bureaus, and imposes penalties for non-compliance.
