What is the National Schools Championship?
The Stanbic National Schools Championship, a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Stanbic Bank, is dedicated to empowering exceptional youth in secondary and vocational institutes. It provides comprehensive training and mentorship programs aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the years, this initiative has injected over 6 billion Ugandan shillings into the economy and has spawned more than 200 successful businesses, highlighting Stanbic Bank’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment and bridging the gap between education and industry needs.
How does the National School Championship Benefit Participants?
Participants in the National Schools Championship are equipped with essential skills and knowledge through:
- Educator Empowerment: A 2-day workshop for teachers focuses on cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship within schools.
- Practical Learning: Participating schools receive specialised toolkits to encourage skill development.
- Bootcamp for Champions: Top students and their teachers undergo a 5-day residential business boot camp to further hone their entrepreneurial abilities.
- Rewarding Excellence: The NSC recognises and celebrates outstanding achievement, offering a combined prize pool of 70 million Ugandan shillings to top schools, teachers, and alumni.

What happened during the launch event?
The launch event commenced with a gracious welcome from Diana Ondoga, the Manager of Corporate and Social Investment at Stanbic Bank, who assumed the role of Master of Ceremonies. With finesse, she orchestrated the proceedings, inviting representatives from various partners to the stage to elucidate their invaluable contributions to the initiative.
Representing IUEA was Sheila Ombogo, the Head of Marketing, who eloquently showcased our institution’s commitment to nurturing talent through generous scholarships and a holistic educational experience. Over the years, our scholarship program has seen significant growth, exemplified by our contributions of $10,652 in 2018 and $13,311 in 2021, supporting the pursuit of diplomas and bachelor’s degrees alike.
During the event, a representative from Roofings Ltd. delivered an impassioned plea for environmental stewardship. He underscored the often underestimated significance of trees in our daily lives, urging attendees to plant seeds of change. To support this noble cause, Roofings Ltd. generously provided free seeds, available for collection at their offices, fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental awareness.
George Mutekanga, the Commissioner for Private Schools at the Ministry of Education, emphasised the importance of the competition in addressing Uganda’s youth unemployment crisis. This concern was highlighted in Uganda’s Vision 2040 National Development Plan, an agenda that IUEA’s partnership with NEMA aimed to address. Mr. Mutekanga officially inaugurated the 9th Season of the National Schools Championship, marking a significant milestone in youth empowerment.

Attendees from diverse backgrounds came together to capture the moment, fostering unity and collaboration. Afterward, they mingled, strengthening bonds and discussing ways to ensure the initiative’s success.
