That’s why our Academia-Industry Partnership Series connects students with renowned industry professionals, giving them hands-on exposure to cutting-edge advancements in energy and sustainability, key areas that align with the SDGs.

Recently, our students engaged in two interactive sessions led by industry experts—one focused on Directional Drilling, a crucial technique in petroleum engineering, and another on Renewable Energy & Sustainability, exploring how engineering solutions can create a more sustainable future. These discussions not only enhanced students’ technical knowledge but also empowered them with problem-solving skills that apply to both their careers and everyday life.

Directional Drilling: The Art of Precision in Oil Exploration

On February 22nd and 23rd, our petroleum engineering students engaged in an in-depth webinar on Directional Drilling, hosted by Dr Mutwakil Nafi and featuring Dr Nabil Sameh as the guest speaker. This interactive session provided students with a deep understanding of one of the most crucial techniques in the oil and gas industry.

What Is Directional Drilling?

It might seem logical that drilling should always be done straight down, but the reality is far more complex. Directional drilling involves precisely controlling the trajectory of a wellbore to reach underground reserves that might otherwise be inaccessible.

Why Is Directional Drilling Essential?

While drilling straight down may seem more efficient, there are situations where directional drilling is the only viable solution. Some key scenarios include:

• Inaccessible Locations – When oil reserves lie beneath urban areas or protected land.
• Salt Dome Drilling – Requires precise angling 
• Fault Management – Ensures stability and minimizes environmental risks.

Should You Consider a Career in Oil Exploration?

The petroleum industry offers exciting opportunities for those interested in energy, sustainability, and economic development. With Africa’s oil sector expanding—particularly in Uganda—graduates trained in modern drilling techniques will be highly sought after.

To further enhance the experience, students completed an assessment and earned a certificate upon passing, reinforcing IUEA’s commitment to hands-on learning.

Renewable Energy and Sustainability: A Vision for a Better Future

On February 25th, the discussion shifted to the future of energy, with an engaging seminar on Renewable Energy & Sustainability hosted by Dr. Bob Rich Muhereza Mwecumi and featuring the esteemed Dr. Al-Mas Sendegeya. This interactive session explored the evolving role of electrical engineers in building a sustainable future. Dr Sendegeya’s in-depth understanding was on display as he broke down complex concepts into digestible bites, showcasing his desire to make the search for sustainable energy solutions more accessible. His insights perfectly embody the spirit of World Engineering Day, demonstrating how engineers hold the key to unlocking solutions that drive global sustainability.

How Can We Improve Sustainability in Energy?

Dr Sendegeya emphasised that sustainability must be addressed at every stage of energy production and consumption. He broke it down into four key areas:

• Consumer-Focused Approach – Energy solutions must be designed to meet real-world needs.
• Types of Energy Used – New forms of renewable energy must be explored.
• Methods of Extraction – Sustainable extraction techniques must be prioritised.
• Energy Consumption Habits – Simple behavioural changes can dramatically reduce energy waste.

A Real-World Example: Can a Country Run on 100% Renewable Energy?

It may seem impossible, but Germany achieved this in January 2018 when favourable wind conditions allowed the country to generate 85% of its electricity from wind power, with hydropower and biomass covering the rest. Dr Sendegeya used this as a real-world success story to inspire students, proving that a renewable future is not just a dream—it’s a work in progress.

Sustainability Starts at Home

Beyond large-scale innovations, small everyday actions can make a big difference. Did you know that simply turning off the TV at the socket instead of leaving it on standby can significantly reduce power consumption? Or that frequently opening the refrigerator door noticeably increases energy usage? These simple habits not only help the environment but also lower your electricity bill.

Dr Sendegeya’s key message? “Never Give Up!” Every effort towards sustainability—big or small—matters.
