What does it take to shine on the global stage? For Eritrean students, it takes ambition, resilience, and the right platform. At the International University of East Africa (IUEA), we take pride in being that platform—a launchpad for talent, innovation, and global impact. Our Eritrean students are excelling in every field, from technology and business to fashion and leadership, proving that perseverance knows no bounds.

As we approach this year’s Cultural Gala, a grand celebration of diversity, we want to highlight the incredible Eritrean women who embody strength, ambition, and resilience—whether on the battlefield, in academia, or on the runway.

The Rise of Eritrean Women in Pageantry

Eritrean women have long defied expectations, and Snit Tewoldemedhin’s recent rise in the world of pageantry is no exception. In 2023, she made history as Eritrea’s first-ever contestant in Miss Universe. A neuroscience graduate, advocate for children with disabilities and breast cancer awareness champion, Snit represents the fusion of beauty, intelligence, and purpose.

She once hesitated to compete due to her deep respect for her faith and Eritrea’s conservative culture, where beauty pageants are often met with scepticism. But after encouragement from a friend, she took the bold step—and won Miss Africa USA 2023.

“Just as we build wheelchair-accessible buildings, we should also adapt our education systems to ensure children with special needs can thrive.”
— Said Snit Tewoldemedhin, Miss Africa 2023 in All Hail the African Queen

At IUEA, we share this commitment to education for all. Through scholarships, award-winning online learning, and inclusive initiatives, we are making quality education accessible to diverse communities, empowering students to break barriers and create impact.

The Legacy of Eritrean Women

Eritrean women have been breaking barriers long before the runway lights shone on them. During the fight for Eritrea’s independence, women made up 30% of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), serving on the battlefield and in leadership roles. Their contributions were not just about independence—they challenged gender roles and redefined women’s place in society.

Even today, the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) continues the fight for gender equality and women’s empowerment, ensuring Eritrean women can stand up for their rights and thrive in all sectors.

At IUEA, we are proud to champion empowerment and inclusivity. Our initiatives include:

  • Women-focused scholarships to support academic excellence
  • Community outreach programmes providing essential resources to underprivileged girls
  • Strong female leadership, including our very own Chancellor, who serves as a role model for young women

Through these efforts, we continuously strive to level the playing field, ensuring that all students, regardless of gender, can chase their dreams fearlessly.

IUEA’s Eritrean Stars: Mikal Tesfay & Ililta Nezerab

One of IUEA’s brightest stars is Mikal Tesfay, an Eritrean student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Her journey from IUEA’s Mr. & Miss IUEA pageant to winning Miss Eritrea Uganda 2024/2025 showcases the power of perseverance.

Mikal’s passion for fashion and modelling started in childhood, designing outfits for dolls. With support from her family and IUEA’s vibrant platform, she launched her career, ultimately winning the Miss Eritrea Uganda and the Beauty of Africa pageants. Beyond modelling, she has made an impact in journalism and media, even interviewing Hollywood star Tiffany Haddish.

Mikal Tesfay commands the runway with confidence and elegance as a contestant in the 2023 Mr. & Miss IUEA beauty pageant.

Alongside Mikal, another Eritrean trailblazer at IUEA is Ililta Nezerab Masalab, our very own Miss IUEA 2023/2024. Studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration, Ililta’s victory reinforces IUEA’s commitment to celebrating beauty, diversity, and leadership across all nationalities.

Eritrean Students at IUEA: A Family Beyond Borders

The stories of these incredible Eritrean women are testaments to resilience, ambition, and cultural pride—values that define what it means to be Eritrean. From students excelling in academics and business to staff contributing to our vibrant learning environment, the Eritrean essence is deeply embedded in IUEA’s multicultural community.

At IUEA, our Eritrean students have found a home away from home. Whether it’s an Eritrean from Saudi Arabia conversing in Arabic with a South Sudanese student or collaborating with peers from Pakistan, Nigeria, and Uganda, they are part of a truly global network.

Robel Hagos, an Eritrean IUEA student, shines as the First Runner-Up in the Mr. & Miss IUEA 2024 beauty competition.

But while they embrace international friendships, Eritrean students remain deeply connected to their roots often beautifully showcased at our annual Cultural Gala.

This year, as the Eritrean flag waves high, we won’t just be celebrating music, dance, and tradition—we’ll be honouring the resilience and the incredible women who have shaped the Eritrean legacy.
